Session 14: Building and Managing Media Relationships

Building a professional relationship with a journalist network can be integral to having a wider reach for your organisation's message.

Summary | Checklist

  1. Identify the publications you want to target

  2. Scan the publication for relevant sections for your content

  3. Identify relevant journalists by checking the journalists last few bylines

  4. Work on pitch notes to capture news point first, then supplement with relevant information

  5. For media rounds, before visiting press offices, call up (or mail) reception / journalist to fix an appointment

  6. Before the meeting, provide relevant info beforehand over email or carry printouts

  7. The conversation during meeting should be about aligning your story with the reporters’ interest

  8. Exchange cards, drop an email with all relevant information/action points

  9. Follow-up thrice and then move on or escalate

  10. After sharing story points, follow-up on what else the journalist would require for the story
